Research Paper Submission Guidelines

We are now accepting papers for the Spring 2025 volume! The deadline to submit is January 3, 2025 at 11:59 pm EST. If you have any questions, please email gnovis@georgetown.edu.

For over twenty years, the Gnovis Journal has been regularly publishing leading-edge graduate student scholarship on the interrelated nature of emerging technologies, popular culture, new media, politics, and more. We welcome submissions from current graduate students (both Masters and PhD) studying at any accredited institution both in the U.S. and internationally. 

In order to be eligible for publication in the journal, submitted papers should be approximately 3,000-8,000 words in length and engage with, as well as extend beyond, one or more of the topics listed below. Additionally, all submissions must include a brief abstract and employ author-date APA Style citations in order to be considered for peer review. Papers may address a wide range of subjects, including but not limited to:

  • science and technology studies
  • traditional and new media studies
  • literary/film analysis
  • cultural criticism
  • cultural identity and politics
  • politics and new media/emerging technologies
  • art and new media/emerging technologies
  • mediated communication and digital representation
  • race/class/sexuality/gender and new media/emerging technologies
  • design thinking and UX
  • linguistics and new media/emerging technologies

All selected authors will be published online on both the gnovis website and through the Georgetown library’s DigitalGeorgetown collection. 

How to Submit

Please submit articles via email attachment to gnovis@georgetown.edu. The attachment should be a Word document with all personal identifying information removed. Please include in the body of the email your name, contact information, and school affiliation (including program name).

Research Paper Submission Guidelines

  • Submissions citations must be in author-date APA Style format and must have in-text parenthetical citations (author, date, pg. number) with an alphabetical end bibliography.
  • All submissions should include an abstract of no more than 250 words summarizing the project and conclusions.
  • Submissions must be in Times New Roman, 12 point font, double-spaced.
  • Papers are generally between 3,000 and 8,000 words (10-25 double-spaced pages), excluding citations.
  • Research on human subjects, including case studies and hypothesis testing, may require IRB approval before it can be published in gnovis. For information on IRB approval, please visit Georgetown University IRB Guidelines.

Gnovis Journal Review Process

When a paper is accepted for review, it is sent to two gnovis peer reviewers. These are generally current students and alumni of Georgetown University; they will read the project critically, paying close attention to both style and content and return it with commentary to the gnovis editorial team. If it meets the journal’s editorial standards, the project is given back to the author for necessary revisions. Once necessary revisions are made to the satisfaction of the author and the gnovis editorial team, the project goes through a final evaluation by the staff before copyediting and publishing. Journal issues are published in the Spring of each year. Authors whose work is selected for publication will be published in the digital scholarly Gnovis Journal. In addition, the article will be permanently published and archived through Digital Georgetown. Each published author will also be invited to present their research to students, faculty, and other authors at a special graduate student conference at Georgetown University.
