On April 11th, 2012, gnovis held its first conference titled “Academedia” at Georgetown University. The goal of this gathering of minds was to discuss how new media practices are shaping research and learning, as well as to leave attendees with some practical hints about how they can better integrate new media practices within their lives and intellectual pursuits.

The conference hosted keynote speaker Don Knezek, Chief Executive Officer for the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE), followed by three outstanding panels and then two student presenters during the lunch. Below are just a few of the discussion highlights and the full schedule and list of presenters can be found here:

  • The four C’s of new media change in research and learning: communication, collaboration, critical thinking, and creativity.
  • “New media in learning and research is not just about achieving but also about engagement” – Eric Goldstein, Executive Director and founder, One World Education.
  • The product market has outpaced the absorption capacity and development of research and learning goals in academic institutions. How can we rectify this?
  • Online spaces can fulfill dual needs: they can create a feeling of uniqueness and simultaneously a sense of belonging. – Sarah Thompson, Executive Director of International Student Conferences.
  • Do new media tools encourage activism or “slacktivism” – how do we strike a balance? – Rami Khater, Senior New Media Producer for The Stream, Al Jazeera English.
