Book Review Submission Guidelines

We are now accepting book reviews for the Spring 2025 volume! The deadline to submit a pitch for your book review topic is November 8, 2024. If you have any questions about the pitch, please email gnovis@georgetown.edu.

gnovis is seeking book reviews that incorporate an academic perspective, drawing on relevant theories or methodologies. The reviewed book can come from any genre—academic, non-fiction, or even fiction—as long as it connects with the interdisciplinary themes of communication, culture, and technology.

In keeping with the journal’s interdisciplinary tradition, gnovis is keen on publishing book reviews that reflect the diverse interests of its authors and peers. Hence, rather than require one to review a book of gnovis‘ choosing, the Editorial Board invites interested students to select their own book to review. Authors interested in writing a book review must follow a two-step process: 1) pitch a book to review, and 2) if the pitch is approved, write and submit the review.

  • Pitch Deadline: November 8, 2024
  • Selection Notification: Final week of November
  • Submission Deadline: January 3, 2025

1. Pitching a Book

Deadline: November 8, 2024

Book review pitches should present a brief argument detailing the significance of the book and its connection to the broader fields of communication, culture, and technology. Please include explanations of your intended approach to the review and describe the relevant perspective or experience that equips you to offer a well-informed and insightful review.

Please submit your brief pitch here, indicating which book you would like to review, along with an explanation of why and how you plan to approach the review. The last day to submit a book review pitch is November 8, 2024 at 11:59 pm EST.

After careful consideration by our editorial team, gnovis book review editors will notify selected contributors by the last week of November.

2. Submitting a Book Review

Deadline: January 3, 2025

If a pitch is approved, the author may proceed to write their review. Your review should critically analyze the book and demonstrate its relevance to the communication, culture, and technology framework. You can explore previous book reviews on our website for reference and inspiration. We recommend keeping book reviews to roughly 600-2,000 words in length. Please include a heading at the start of your review with the following information: Author / Editor Name. (Year of Publication) Book Title in italics. Publisher. Price. ISBN-13. In addition, submissions must be in Times New Roman, 12 point font, double-spaced, using APA Style citations.

The following should be considered when writing the book review:

  • The book’s target audience, or who would find it useful
  • The book’s main arguments, goals, or questions, and how effectively these were achieved or addressed (please be constructive in your critique)
  • The background information or context surrounding the book’s topic
  • The book’s overall organization and structure
  • If relevant, the research methods used and their application
  • A general discussion about the book’s strengths and weaknesses

Please submit your book reviews via email attachment to gnovis@georgetown.edu by January 3, 2025 at 11:59 pm EST. The attachment should be a Word document.

If you have any questions about how to ensure your paper aligns to the above requirements, please contact gnovis@georgetown.edu

Book Review Editorial Process

While selection is an important first step, it does not guarantee publication. Submitted book reviews will be passed onto gnovis book review editors for initial screening and editorial feedback. All accepted book reviews published in the digital scholarly Gnovis Journal. In addition, the article will be permanently published and archived through Digital Georgetown. Each published author will also be invited to present their work to students, faculty, and other authors at a special graduate student conference at Georgetown University.

Gnovis Blog Post Submissions

For who do not have a full-length book review submission, please note that gnovis also accepts scholarly blog posts on an ongoing basis.
